Zaragoza tops Brindisi 96-93 in 2OT at Champions League

Champions League

One of the most exciting games coming out of Round 7 of Champions League Basketball on Wednesday was the 96-93 win over Tecnyconta Zaragoza over Happy Casa Brindisi in double-overtime.

It was one of three games served up from Group D. Both teams were 3-3 coming into the game and as a result, Zaragoza managed to go up in the group’s standings. They’re now in 4th place with a 4-3 record. Brindisi, with its fourth loss of the 2019-20 season are now in 6th place with their 3-4 slate.

The action-packed game was a back-and-forth affair and needed Dylan Ennis to sink two critical free throws at the end of the first overtime period to keep Zaragoza’s hopes of winning the game alive. He made the clutch shots and even chipped in 12 extra points in the second overtime to help power Zaragoza to victory. Despite struggling with his shot throughout the night, Ennis still managed to lead his team in scoring with 21 points, setting the pace for four other teammates in joining him to score in double figures.

Ironically, Zaragoza could have put the game earlier, if they only connected on more of their free throws in this game. As a team, they sank a dismal 27-of-43 shots from the stripe, an area of their game that they definitely need to work on in practice.

Zaragoza was in control in the beginning and even held a 15-point lead at one point in the game. However, Brindisi would not give up and rallied from a 62-53 deficit in the dying minutes of regulation to force the first overtime.

The top-scorer of the game itself was Brindisi’s Tyler Stone who dropped a monster line of 27 points, 19 rebounds, three 3-pointers and five assists.

The other two games from Group D that were played out on December 4th saw Telekom Baskets Bonn fall at home to a visiting PAOK Thessaloniki 83-85 in one of the more surprising upsets this week.

Falco-Vulcano Energia KC Szombathely, conversely, emerged with a decisive blowout victory over Neptunas Klaipeda, 97-73.

Dijon now has the solo lead in Group D with a 5-2 record, while the overall best performing team in Champions League Basketball remains Spanish club Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias with an unblemished 7-0 record in Group C.
