Teams Set for Zone V Championships in Uganda


UGANDA will have four flag-bearing teams in the upcoming Zone V basketball championships due August 20-26 in Kampala, Uganda.

Local basketball governing body, FUBA intermitted that all is set to host the week long regional club basketball competition at two different venues – Lugogo Indoor Stadium (MTN Arena) and Makerere Mainground Basketball Court.

“All is set for the opening ceremomy of the Zone 5 championships on Monday” FUBA Administration vice president, Patrick Ogwel said.Seventeen teams from seven countries have confirmed participation in the event.

DMark Power and Kyambogo Warriors will represent Uganda on the men’s side while UCU Lady Canons and KCCA Leopards on the womens. Other teams that confirmed participation include KCB, Cooperative Bank, Eagles Wings and Kenya Port Authority (KPA) from Kenya; ABC, Jeshi Stars, Lioness from Tanzania; Espior and APR from Rwanda; Uranani, New Stars and Berco Stars from Burundi.

“We expect teams from Sudan, South Sudan and Ethiopia but we are yet to get confirmation” Ogwel added.

The week long Uganda festival will feature teams from Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya and host Uganda.The last event in Kampala in 2009 attracted a record 19 teams.

Game day tickets will go for Ug Shs. 10,000. “This is the biggest tournament in the region so the tickets will go for a little more than the local league games” FUBA publicist, Ali Balunywa said.

The federation promised high level organisation after securing the indoor stadium. “We will deliver the most exciting championships in the region” Balunywa said.
