Russell Westbrook breaks single-season triple-double record

Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook (190 cm, UCLA ’08) made NBA history on Sunday night. He finished Sunday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets with a triple-double which marks number 42 this season. This breaks Oscar Robertson’s record for triple-doubles in a season which was set after the 1961/1962 season. The record was thought to be an untouchable achievement but Westbrook proved otherwise.

Westbrook not only recorded another triple-double but also led his team to a tough road victory in Denver. He led his team with a spectacular 50 points, 16 rebounds, and ten assists as well as making a deep buzzer beater three to give his team the win. Below is the Thunder’s final possession where Westbrook plays the hero for his team.

The race for NBA MVP could be in Westbrook’s favor after this incredible feat. He will finish the season averaging a triple-double which has not occurred since Robertson during the 1961/1962 season. After this game, Westbrook averages 31.7 ppg, 10.7 rpg and 10.4 apg which are all career-highs.

Westbrook and the Thunder currently sit in sixth place in the Western Conference standings with a 46-34 record. This comes after the departure of Kevin Durant last offseason. Oklahoma City clinched the sixth seed in the playoffs which will give them a first-round matchup against the Houston Rockets. The matchup between the Thunder and Rockets will include the two favorites for NBA MVP with Westbrook and James Harden.
