Las Palmas, Gran Canaria – Real Madrid has added another feather to its cap. This time, the Spanish powerhouse has successfully defended its title as champions of the Cop del Rey against El Clasico rivals FC Regal Barcelona. Led by tournament MVP Rudy Fernandez, Real Madrid prevailed 77-71.This the second title this season that Real Madrid has claimed at the expense of Barca in the finals. The first was the Spanish Super Cup.

Given the rivalry between these two clubs, it came as no surprise that the game would be hard fought. The tone of the battle was set by their defensive effort. Barca was well aware that if Real Madrid’s up-tempo offense would be left unchecked, it would spell their doom. Most of the points were scored in close range to begin. The game plan was sound and worked out for them in the first quarter as Barcelona secured a 21-18 lead. Fernandez and Nocioni turned up the heat in the second frame, yet Barca still kept up and stayed in stride.

The turning point came in the third period when Real Madrid managed to pull away, thanks to a 23-15 rally. Ante Tomic did his best to keep Barca in the game and defensively Barca succeeded in limiting Real Madrid to just 13 points in the final period. In the end, Real Madrid was able to hold off their rivals and come away with their back-to-back Copa del Rey win.

Rudy Fernandez led Real Madrid with 16 points. He was aided by Sergio Rodriguez, Gustavo Ayon, and Andres Nocioni who each chipped in 10 points in a solid team effort. Nocioni also came up with two solid blocks that helped his team swing things in their favor.

Regal Barcelona saw Ante Tomic as their top performer. He finished the night with an impressive double-double, scoring a game-high 25 points, while also grabbing 11 rebounds.
