Serbian powerhouse Partizan NIS Belgrade has had a torrid start to the 2014/2015 season across all competitions and things do not look any better after Sunday’s Adriatic League defeat against Union Olimpija Ljubljana. Before discussing Partizan Belgrade’s awful form and this loss, the game will be remembered for a freak basket that lit up the fourth quarter.
The hosts were already coasting to victory over the Serbian contingent when Union Olimpija forward Blaž Mahkovic pulled off an incredible shot. Running out of the playing area behind the basket, Mahkovic hooked a shot straight from the circus, sending the ball over the backboard and into the bucket. It was a moment of magic that will go down as one of the best shots in the history of the sport, truly exhibition stuff. Check out the video below:
Partizan has won the Serbian league for the last eight seasons and is always a threat in both the Eurocup and Adriatic League, but this season the team has been woeful. There is still plenty of time left in the fledgling campaign for the club to turn things around, but five consecutive defeats to Szolnok, Krka, Cedevita Zagreb, and Union Olimpija (Adriatic) and Lietuvos Rytas (Eurocup) paint a worrying picture.
The Belgrade outfit will live to fight another day of course, so perhaps it is just better to savour that truly amazing shot.
