Panathinaikos claims another Greek Cup

PanathinaikosIt is not a vintage year for Greek Basketball this season, with both Panathinaikos and Olympiacos struggling at times in the Euroleague. However, Panathinaikos has picked up some form since the turn of the year and The Greens celebrated that uptick in performances by clinching the Greek Cup.

Without old foe and arch nemesis Olympiacos Piraeus to contend with, Panathinaikos had an easy workout against Faros Keratsiniou in the final on Sunday night. With a score of 101-54, it is clear that Panathinaikos controlled much of the game, and the result means the club has now won the last five consecutive Greek Cups, while also lifting the trophy a record 17 times overall.

It was once again a display of The Greens cementing their place as the most successful Greek club in history and now the club will change its focus to reclaiming the Greek League and progressing in the Euroleague.

The writing was on the wall from the opening seconds for Faros Keratsiniou, as the unfancied team could not live with the hot favourites from the start. Through the first quarter Panathinaikos carved a 31-12 lead and never looked back, extending to 57-26 during the long break. It was one way traffic from there as the defending champions took a huge 76-38 lead through thirty minutes and then wrapped up the contest in the closing act.

Vladimir Jankovic led the win with 13 points, while James Gist added 13 points, and Dimitris Diamantidis 8 points in an MVP display.

Gaios Skordilis was the game high scorer with 14 points, followed by Vaggelis Karaboulas with 11 points.
