NBPA conducts poll to see if players want to relaunch season

An informal NBPA survey shows most NBA players want to get back on the court for games.

The National Basketball Players Association sent it in a text message to players on Tuesday, according to published reports.

The NBPA poll contained one question (“yes” or “no”) to gauge if players wanted to complete the 2019-20 season. The Los Angeles Times reported that “several players confirmed they were contacted and asked” to participate in the survey.

Based on the NBPA survey, 70 percent of NBA players support restarting the season and 30 percent oppose it, one player estimated, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“But 30 percent is a big number,” the unnamed player was quoted as saying by the Los Angeles Times. “And what do you say to somebody who says, ‘You know what, I just don’t feel safe?’ It’s hard to argue that. But there are reasons to argue that because I know the NBA would be one of the safest places to be at. That thing would be tight, clean, protocol, all that.”

The NBA suspended the 2019-20 season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus on March 11. There are no definitive plans yet to relaunch the season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. But the NBPA and NBA officials have held talks on the matter.

However, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has given teams the green light to begin opening training facilities.
