Series MVP Tamika Catchings (1.85m, college: Tennessee) led the Indiana Fever to their first WNBA Title in franchise history, beating the defending champion Minnesota Lynx 87:78 in game four to take their best of five series, three games to one, in front of their home crowd Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Catchings tallied 25 points in game four to pace the Fever to the win. Her MVP-winning numbers for the series were: 22.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game over the four championship series games.

Indiana FeverThe Fever took a 25:18 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they only allowed the Lynx to win one quarter, the second, but never gave up the lead. After the first half the home squad was up 47:42. The two squads played even 16:16 in the third, keeping Indiana’s five point advantage heading into the final frame. In the last 10 minutes Minnesota cut the margin to three 30 seconds into the quarter, but couldn’t get any closer. As time ticked away, the Fever dropped in key three-points and hit seven of seven free throws in the last minute of play, to secure the game and the Fever’s first WNBA title.

The key statistic in this contest was free throws, while Minnesota shot a very respectable 83.3% (10 for 12), the Fever shot an amazing 93.5%, dropping in 29 of the 31 charity tosses during the game.

Catchings lead all scorers with 25 for the Fever, Erin Phillips added 18, and Briann January and Shavonte Zellous contributed 15 points each to the Championship win.

Lindsay Whalen paced the Lynx with 22 points and Maya Moore added 16 to the loss.

      Considering the fact that the average attendance of all WNBA teams is just under 7,500 fans per game, I’d say that there are a few people following the WNBA. We haven’t covered much of as we are focusing on getting the site off the ground and have our hands full with an abundance of men’s leagues and news, but the finals are certainly newsworthy…
