Eurobasket 2015 decision postponed by FIBA

The future of Eurobasket 2015 is still up in the air after FIBA announced that a decision on the tournament has been postponed until the beginning of June.

An accord was made to uphold a request made by the Ukrainian Basketball Federation to postpone any decision regarding Eurobasket 2015. The tournament was due to be held in Ukraine, but recent political trouble in the country forced the FIBA board to prepare a contingency plan to completely of partially relocate the tournament should the Ukraine situation not resolve itself.

Now any decision on Eurobasket 2015 will not be made until early June as more time is needed to “work on the best possible solution not only for Ukraine but also for the EuroBasket tournament and image itself,” according to Sasha Volkov, President of the Ukrainian Federation. That will mean any vote will be made by a new FIBA board as a fresh board (2014-2018) will be named to office on Saturday, May 17.

The eventual outcome will decide whether Eurobasket 2015 can go ahead completely or partially in Ukraine or if new federations will need to host the tournament. FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak said there is no shortage of other nations interested in either co-hosting or fully hosting the event should the board decide the competition cannot go ahead in Ukraine.
