Darko Milicic considering leaving Celtics

Darko Milicic

Darko Milicic (212 cm) has been reported to be considering leaving his position with the Boston Celtics to return home to Serbia and be closer to his ailing mother. Milicic, the number 2 pick in the 2003 NBA draft, didn’t travel with the Celtics this weekend for their contest with the Pistons and insiders are saying he’s very close to making a decision to take the rest of the season off. The decision is most likely to be easier for him considering his increased frustration in a lack of a role with the Celtics, having only seeing the floor four minutes and 30 seconds against Milwaukee on Nov. 2nd, since the season started.

Milicic’s history in the NBA started when he was 12, unbeknownst to him. In 1997, the Vancouver Grizzlies traded their 2003 1st round draft pick to the Detroit Pistons for Otis Thorpe. In 2003, Detroit used that pick, the second pick overall, to draft Milicic, a 7’0″ 18-year old from Serbia. The Draft class of 2003 is one of the most storied in NBA history with LeBron James going in the 1st spot (19,314 points scored in his career to date), Milicic 2nd (2,813 pts), Carmelo Anthony 3rd (16,115 pts), Chris Bosh 4th (12,954 pts), and Dwyane Wade 5th (15,125 pts). Milicic has suited up for Detroit, Orlando, Memphis, New York, Minnesota and most recently Boston and has earned just under $47m over his nine seasons in the NBA. His contract with the Celtics was reported as $1,229,255.
