Becky Hammon, new Spurs assistant coach

The San Antonio Spurs are making history after announcing that they are hiring WNBA veteran Becky Hammon (175 cm, Colorado State’99) as their new, full-time assistant coach. Hammon will be the first female to become a regular-season assistant coach in the NBA. Aside from her long resume filled with accomplishments in basketball, she is also a very active leader in the San Antonio community. Hammon has drawn praise from many quarters and has the full support of Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said in an NBA press release. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

Becky is currently finishing off her 16th season in the WNBA and is a six-time All-Star. She was a one-time member of American National Team in 2006. She is also a naturalized Russian citizen and has represented Russia in international competition as a member of their national team in 2008 and again in 2010-2012.

Hammon has been impressive as a natural leader and brings a lot of experience and a keen understanding of the game.
