While it is still early into the 2013-14 season, excited onlookers cannot help but revel in the early action taking place, sating their appetites for basketball action that grew over the off-season. Fans and followers of the German Bundesliga were treated to a quality match-up in Round 2 of the regular season between two dangerous clubs. FC Bayern Muenchen, a fresh addition to the Euroleague this season, took down the defending German Bundesliga Champions Brose Baskets Bamberg, 84-74.

The two giants met in Munich’s Audi Dome and by the 10-point deficit in the endgame, it appears the home court advantage may have been a helpful boost. While this is just their first encounter, any strategic and psychological advantage the win can provide Bayern for the future could prove to be useful down the road.

“My team played today at its maximum limit,” Bayern coach Svetislav Pesic praised his team after the game. “From the intensity ago that was great.”

Bayern got their offense ticking early into the game. Bamberg were instructed to slow down the pace and force their opponents to execute in the half-court. Bayern had a nine point lead at the half. Come the third quarter, the defending champs displayed their winning form and closed the gap, evening the match entering the final frame. Bayern was able to pull away thanks to the effort of American import Chevon Toutman (202 cm, Pittsburgh’05) and Bosnian addition Nihad Djedovic (197 cm), both of whom co-led the team in scoring with 14 points. Bamberg’s Casey Jacobsen (198 cm, Stanford’02) fought hard with 17 points and three assists, but it was not enough to overcome the home team.

American big man John Bryant chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks for Bayern, while Zack Wright (191 cm, Central Missouri’07) and Anton Gavel (189 cm) provided Jacobsen with support by adding 12 and 11 points of their own respectively.
