AEK Athens Wins 2018 Champions League

Basketball Champions League AEK Athens have won the 2018 Champions League title after successfully defeating a formidable opponent AS Monaco 100-94 in finals. This is the first BCL crown for the organization and is a significant improvement for the club. They got as far as the round of 16 in 2016-17. AEK finished third in Group B at the end of the 2017-18 regular season with an 8-6 record. They stepped up their game when the playoffs came around, downing Strasbourg IG in quarterfinals and UCAM Murcia in the semis.

The boys in yellow played to their strengths in this crucial game and it paid off in spades. They kept their opponents at bay with some impressive shooting from beyond the 3-point arc (9-of-17). Led by Mike Green’s 19 points, AEK had five of their players crack double-digits in scoring. It was not all about offense for the Greek team. They also collected nine steals in this game to slow down any momentum Monaco tried to muster. Thanks to his impressive effort, Green was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Monaco’s top-scorer was Sergi Gladyr with 19 points. Their defense could not contain Mike Green. And with him running amok in the first three quarters, Monaco had difficulty in gaining control of the game.

“AEK have done everything to win this battle. They deserved it completely, but they are not better individually than we are. I cannot say this. For me, my players are the best out there.” – Zvezdan Mitrovic, AS Monaco head coach

And that’s a wrap for the 2017-18 BCL season. AEK Athens has prevailed but which time will be able to hoist that trophy above their heads in 2018-19?
