2013 Mediterranean Games moves to semis

The 2013 Mediterranean Games tips off between Turkey and Algeria.

The 2013 Mediterranean Games got underway on Tuesday in Mersin, Turkey, with over 3,000 athletes from 24 countries competing in 27 sports. In Servet Tazegül Sports Hall, the basketball competition tipped off on Tuesday with seven National Teams competing in two groups.

In Group A – Turkey, FYR Macedonia, Egypt, and Algeria were scheduled to play each other club one time to end up with a three-game series, the top two clubs moving on to the semi-finals, the third place team after the round-robin competition would play for 5th-6th place and the fourth team would be eliminated.

In Group B – Serbia, Tunisia, and Italy were scheduled to play a two-game round-robin tournament with the top two teams moving on to the semi-finals, the third place team to play the third place team in Group A for fifth place.

The first day of competition, Tues., June 18th, had Turkey beating Algeria 97:68, Serbia defeating Italy 77:64, and FYR Macedonia, in their first ever time participating in the Mediterranean Games, downing Egypt 74:67 in a contest that needed an extra 5 to determine a winner.

Day 2 (Wed., Jun. 19th) results had FYR Macedonia picking up their second overall win in as many days with an 89:81 victory over Algeria, host Turkey continued to roll with an 86:66 win over Egypt, and Tunisia handed Italy their second loss with a 68:43 win.

The final day of competition (Friday, Jun. 21st) before putting the medal round together saw Serbia win Group B with their second win, this time an 80:73 defeat of Tunisia; Egypt picked up their first win of the competition with an 85:79 victory over Algeria, who remained winless in three attempts; Turkey stood tall above the rest of the field and earned their third win in Group A with a 77:57 victory over FYR Macedonia.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, Jun. 22nd between Turkey and Tunisia, and Serbia and FYR Macedonia. The 5th-6th place game will also be held on Saturday between Egypt and Italy. The finals and 3th place game will take place on Jun. 25th.
