With two years of solid experience in Belgium, Darren Fells is rounding into a quality European professional power forward, possessing a strong body but blessed with strong perimeter shooting skills. He's able to play a complementary role on the team, but yearns for a squad which will emphasize his offensive skills. Fells is a team-player, who plays with a good basketball IQ and lets the game come to him.
One of the hidden jewels of college basketball, Darren Fells had a prolific career at UC Irvine, leaving the school as the Anteater's 3rd leading career rebounder and fifth in career scoring. Fells is a physical specimen, a 6'7, 255-pound power forward/center, who plays big inside the paint and plays much taller, due to his strength and technique. Has no trouble scoring inside or stepping out, facing up and knocking down the jumper. The lefty, who had a tryout in June, 2008 with the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL-American Football), puts the "power" into the power forward (his older brother Daniel is a veteran NFL tight end). He is rather nimble for a big man, which explains why he was viewed as a tight end prospect by the Vikings. Darren is what they call a "hard hat" player, someone who shows up to work every day and outworks his competition. The lefty has excellent footwork, which complements his big, soft hands. Has an excellent body to bang on the block, all muscle without any excess weight. An intelligent player, who plays with poise and has had no trouble guarding 7-footers (he had 19 in his senior year matchup against Texas A&M's 7'0, 255-pound DeAndre Jordan, who was a first-round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Jordan had 12 points in their encounter). Has the upside to play at the highest levels of European play. |
