Improving big man, 6-foot-9, 235-pound Yamene Coleman, who came out of Troy University in 2010, helping them to the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference, did play in Romania for his first season overseas. Coleman, who averaged 10.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in the Sun Belt as a SR, was a transfer from the University of Alabama of the SEC (Southeastern Conference), where he played his first three seasons of NCAA ball. "This was his first full year with any significant on-court playing time," said Don Maestri, who has been the head coach at Troy for 28 years. "He got better as the year went on. He was a major factor in the last 10 games of the season; we don’t win the conference regular season championship without Yamene. We came within one win of the NCAA Tournament; he was a very important player for us." Coleman, who had redshirted at Alabama as a true freshman, and then was a role player for the Crimson Tide backing up talented frontcourt players like Jermareo Davidson, Richard Hendrix and JaMychal Green. He did receive his dcollege egree in his first four years at Alabama, then decided to transfer to Troy, where he would be immediately eligible. Troy’s leading rebounder (7.6 in 33 games, 8.3 in Sun Belt play), Coleman had eight double-doubles on the season and he was the team’s leading rebounder in 19 games. He had personal highs of 20 points (twice) and 16 rebounds this season. "Yamene is a very good athlete, he’s strong inside the paint and he runs the floor really well. He is a consistent rebounder and he plays very good position defense, his man never got an easy shot," said Maestri. "Probably the best thing that Yamene does is his outlet passing after the defensive rebound. He is a very good passer, he can find the open point guard and he gets the pass out quickly." He started all 33 games for Troy (20-13) in his only season at Troy. Statistically, his best individual game this season was his 20 points (10-14 2FG), 14 rebound game at Sun Belt rival South Alabama. "It’s kind of a shame that he was on a team which was so perimeter oriented (Troy’s top three scorers played the 1-3 positions, averaging between 11 and 16 points per game, respectively), we didn’t get him the ball as often as I would have liked,” said Maestri. "Yamene has a nice jump hook and can score down low. He’s also got the ability to face-up, shoot or attack the basket." "I don’t get many true big men like Yamene," continued Maestri. "I wish I had more like him. He’s a very good teammate, a hard worker in practice and always had a good attitude. He’s a good player and I expect that he’ll continue to get even better. Yamene does know how to rebound." Coleman had a high of three blocked shots in a game this season for Troy; his high was six blocks in a game while he played for Alabama. Yamene's best solo performance in a Alabama uniform was during his junior season when he had 14 points and 14 rebounds against Tennessee State. Has a very rgood rookie season overseas and is ready to make the next step in his career by moving up to a better league. Was Defensive Player of the Year (2010-'11), selected in the All-Defensive Team and 2nd leading rebounder in Romania after a very succesfull "rookie-season" overseas.
