Dawin Whiten was a four-year starter for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He averaged 11 points per game in each of his first three seasons in San Luis Obispo. The ultimate team player, Whiten was hurt but chose to play during his senior campaign (2007-08) to help the team. He played with an injured foot (Plantar fasciitis) during his senior season, which accounted for the downturn in his stats. He played hurt during the season and had to end his season prematurely, due to the painful foot injury. A big, strong, intelligent player (Cal Poly is one of the better academic schools in NCAA I), Whiten is a true basketball player, with excellent skills and a strong understanding of the game. He has a thick, solid build, but also possesses good speed and quickness. A true shooter with deep range, Whiten can spot up and knock down the 3 or he can also create his own shot off the dribble (has a strong step-back move). Dawin (pronounced "Dah-Win") understands the nuances of the game and is effective running the pick & roll/pick & pop. Has a steady handle on the dribble, and with his strong frame, often powers past lesser bodies on the way to the basket. Has no problems posting up guards on the block. Whiten (pronounced "Whit-En") also sees the floor well and will find his teammates off of penetration. Dawin is a strong defender, who excels at man coverage, but also lends support to his teammates with his help defense. Despite the injury-plagued senior season, Whiten had quite a few highlights in his Cal Poly career. He had 10 games with more than 20 points and had a career high performance of 31 points (against UC Irvine in 2006-07). In only his seventh game of his collegiate career, the true freshman exploded for 29 points (6-7 3fg) against Rick Majerus' highly rated Utah squad (one of the best performances ever against Majerus, considered by many as the best defensive coach in college basketball). He made over 200 (204) 3-point shots during his college career. Had 33 games where he made at least three 3-pointers in a game; had 20 games where he made at least four 3-pointers. His career high was eight made treys (in 11 attempts against UC Irvine). He is a serious player, with very good fundamentals, who should blossom in Europe.
