Venezuela wins 2015 FIBA Americas Gold!

Venezuela

Venezuela has completed its series of upsets all the way to a 2015 FIBA Americas title, a fitting end to their unexpected Cinderella story. This is their first ever FIBA Americas championship.  They completed a well earned 71-67 victory over Argentina. Canada captured the bronze medal after defeating Mexico 84-83 on Saturday. Both Venezuela and Argentina have earned slots in the basketball competition of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Overall, it was an excellent team effort. They came together to overcome a 21-point performance by Argentina’s Andres Nocioni. Heissler Guillent stepped up in  the absence of Greivis Vasquez and scored 15 points as he led Venezuela to victory. He was also their top performer when Venezuela upset Canada in the semi-finals. He scored 19 points.

Canada and Mexico will get a chance to compete for a spot in the Olympics as they are invited to a qualifying tournament, to be held next summer.
