Uruguay smashes through Chile, 92-52

Venezuela – The Uruguay team opened the South American Championships in style with a start-to-finish domination of Chile, 92-52. The first quarter was foreshadowed how the rest of the game would play out. Uruguay got off to a good start with 16-8 advantage. Their solid defense and which they parlayed into transition offense, something the Chilean team could not keep up with.

By halftime Uruguay’s lead ballooned to 42-23 as Mauricio Aguiar led his team’s efficient attack. It was not a one-man show however, as his teammates got into the action as well. After the break, it was more of the same strong performances from Uruguay. Chile was outclassed in this outing and could not climb out of the chasm Uruguay shoved them into.

Uruguay’s Mauricio Aguiar ended the night with a game-high 18 points, while Sebastian Izaquirre chipped in 14 points of his own. Nicolas Borsellino and Bruno Fitipaldo added 13 points apiece.

Chile’s top performers were Sebastian Suarez and Franco Morales, who scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

Uruguay and Chile are both in the tournament’s Group B along with Peru and host nation Venezuela. Uruguay will have a challenging match against the home team on Saturday. Group A is composed of Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador and Argentina.
