Surf sneak up on top ranked Soles in Ensenada, Mexico

In a stunning upset the The San Diego Surf pulled off a pre-season victory 63-58 against the Soles de Mexicali, Mexico after being behind most of the game. The Surf played an aggressive full court press with a minimum roster to tire out the Soles in the fourth quarter and pull ahead to seal the game.
The Soles, rank 4th on the LNBP, the best professional league in Mexico, led by as much as 11 points through the game and at the start of the 4th quarter. The game was played under international FIBA rules with 10 minute quarters which accounted for the lower scoring game. Although the Surf was held to only 8 points the 1st quarter, the Surf held the Soles to only 8 points the 4th quarter as the Soles tired out with the full court pressure. The Surfs physical conditioning through the summer under the guidance of the Conditioning Coach and former Boston Celtics Anthony Ussery, was a major factor in the win.
Coach Mark Smith made all the right calls from the bench, while Anthony Javey and Christopher Agnes were the heroes with 25 and 24 points each.
High scorers for the Soles were Michael Lizarraga with 16 and Israel Nolasco 14. Rebounds and assists and steals were distributed evenly with the whole Surf squad.
The two teams will meet again next weekend with two games in San Diego, Sat. and Sun. the 25th and 26th. The Soles are bound to bring some cross the border revenge at those meetings. The Soles will travel to Los Angeles and Orange County for games with the L.A. Slam and the Orange County Novastars of the ABA earlier in the week.
