FIBA to probe Australia vs. Angola game

FIBA

FIBA has officially launched an investigation regarding suspicions that Australia deliberately lost a game against Angola during the group stage of the FIBA World Cup 2014. Australia rested two of its key players, Aron Baynes and Joe Ingles in their 83-91 loss to Angola.

“The on-court behaviour displayed by Australia in that game (against Angola) generated huge disappointment by basketball fans and experts,” said a FIBA statement.

“It is widely suspected that Australia lost that game in order to avoid having to face the reigning world champions USA until the semi-finals,” it added.

Australia was eliminated by Turkey, 65-64, during the Round of 16 will not have to face Team USA in the competition. Australia will be able to present its side to FIBA before it decides whether to impose any disciplinary sanctions.
