Dinamo Tbilisi wins Georgian Cup

Dinamo TbilisiThe Georgian Cup final was a contest between third and fourth in the Superleague as Dinamo Tbilisi (3rd) overcame Sokhumi Tbilisi (4th) to lift the trophy. The derby game wasn’t even close as Dinamo controlled long periods of the game and managed to claim the cup with an 85-59 victory.

Many had predicted a close game, but it was anything but as Dinamo was the better team in every department. The team dominated proceedings, scoring from the opening tip off and holding the lead for the entire game, cruising to success. Dinamo approached the game with a defensive tactic, stay tight at the back and punish Sokhumi in offence.

This was clearly in evidence during the first quarter as Dinamo Tbilisi poured in 23 points and shored up at the back to allow Sokhumi just 6 points. The club managed to hold a significant lead throughout and extended to 24 points before the final buzzer sounded. For the first time, the Georgian Basketball Federation offered a prize fund for the winner, with Dinamo receiving 50,000 Laris for victory.

Of course, the true measure is the trophy and the honor of winning it, with the club winning its second consecutive Georgian Cup and aiming for a three-peat next year.

Maksim Kovacevic led the win with 17 points, while Giorgi Sharabidze took possession of the only double-double of the contest with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For his efforts, Sharabidze was awarded the MVP in the post-game ceremony. Juevol Myles and Nodar Gogodze rounded out the Dinamo high scorers with 10 points apiece.
