Phenix City Bombers Added to ABA Expansion Teams

Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it has added the Phenix City Bombers from Phenix City, Alabama to its growing list of expansion teams for the upcoming season that begins in November.  “This is our second Alabama team,” stated Joe  Newman, ABA CEO, “and long overdue.  In Herbert Montgomery, we have an excellent owner with basketball, business, coaching and educational experience.  We think he is a great addition to the ABA and will add much to the SE Division and league.”

The team will be owned by Herbert J. Montgomery Jr.  He received an Associate of Science degree from East Central Community College and went on to further his education at the University of South Florida and Georgia Southwestern University.  From a large family of nine brothers and sisters, he has always had an interest in sports and as a sophomore at Acadian High School, he received honors as the team’s top varsity player and help his team to a championship.  He received 1st team All-State, All-Parish and All American honors. In his senior year, he averaged 27ppg and was named District MVP.  After his senior year, he received scholarship offers from Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, LSU and UNC Charlotte but committed to South Florida.  While at GSU, he averaged 27ppg and was named Conference Player of the Year.

Invited to the NBA Seattle Supersonics pre-draft camp, he chose to play in Europe, Latin America, Greece, France, Germany, England, Dubai and Mexico prior to retiring.  “While I was in England, I participated in many outreach programs and found a new love outside of basketball,” stated Montgomery.  “I am really excited about this opportunity, in particular, working with the youth of the community and I plan to bring focus, love and hope to the children in the area.  We have a lot of work to do but the community has really gotten behind us and we are looking forward to being part of the ABA.”
