NBA Finals likely to have new format

The NBA’s competition committee has voted to recommend a change in the format of the NBA Finals schedule. The recommendation proposes that the league return to the 2-2-1-1-1 game rotation format, doing away with the current 2-3-2 format. The 2-2-1-1-1 format will make the finals consistent with the other playoff rounds.

“The idea was raised at the competition committee and was well-received and the committee ultimately unanimously voted to recommend the change in format,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday.

The league has been using the 2-3-2 format since 1985. Ultimately, the shift back to the other format will allow for competitive Finals series to reach a Game 7 more often. Even though the 2012-13 champions, the Miami Heat, won games six and seven at home, they were only the fourth team in 29 years to do so.

The change is expected to be implemented in the 2014 NBA Finals.
