Groningen wins Dutch Cup

GroningenDonar Groningen has been crowned the Dutch Cup champions after overcoming Shoeters Den Bosch 78-70 in a thrilling final. The winners managed to grab the victory despite the absence of DeJuan Wright, who was missing the game through injury, while Ross Bekkering was also missing.

A tight first quarter saw both sets of players trade buckets, but at the split Donar had carved a narrow 21-20 lead. Den Bosch worked hard throughout an equally tight second frame, managing to win the stanza 16-17 to make it all square at halftime, 37 apiece. The teams remained close on the scoreboard through the third quarter, but Den Bosch had momentum from the second period and took the lead. Through thirty minutes Shoeters held a 50-52 and Groningen had work to do. The players responded well and drained 28 points and turned the game around with strong defence, winning the game.

Lance Jeter topped Groningen with 21 points as the roster reacted well to missing key players. Bill Clark added 14 points for the champions, while Sean Cunningham and Craig Osaikhwuwuomwan scored 11 points each.

Chris Denson was the best scoring player in the game with 22 points, followed by Reggie Johnson with the game’s only double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.
