Eurocup: Kazan beats Banvit at the buzzer

Week 2 of Eurocup competition got underway on Tuesday with four games, while the remaining 20 will be contested on Wednesday across Europe. In Group G Unics Kazan got a buzzer-beating triple from Andrew Goudelock to defeat Banvit Bandirma 72:71. EWE Baskets Oldenburg went on the road and beat Elan Chalon 71:82 in Group B. Belfius Mons Hainaut lost a Group D contest against Virtus Rome, 76:88. In Group F Buducnost Voli Podgorica defeated Aykon TED Ankara Kolejliler 80:73.

Group G
Unics Kazan – Banvit Bandirma, 72:71
Just when it looked like Banvit Bandirma had snatched a win from Unics Kazan on a lay-up by Earl Rowland with one second left on the clock to snap a 69-all tie, the hosts put together a final play that had Goudelock open for a catch and shoot triple that found the bottom of the net to give Unics a 72:71 victory. The win puts Kazan at 2-0 at in a tie for the top of the group, while Banvit falls to 1-1.

In the first frame the clubs found it tough to find the hoop from long-range, but an 8:2 run in the final minutes of the quarter gave the hosts a 24:15 advantage. Unics built their lead to 11 four minutes into the second 10, but from there found it tough to score as Banvit went on an eight point score run to pull to within three, 30:27. They traded baskets for the rest of the half with Kazan holding a four-point lead, 38:34, as they headed into the mid-game break.

Banvit jumped out to a lead with a 2:11 run to open the third quarter, but the home club finished the frame with a 7:0 run to head into the final frame up 57:52. Banvit was able to bridge the small gap in the final minute as Chuck Davis went 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. The clubs drew to a 69-all tie with 45 seconds to play. After a missed triple attempt on the Unics end, Rowland took the ball to the hole to break the tie with a second on the clock. Kazan called a timeout, coach Andrea Trinchieri drew up a play that ended up with the rock falling through the cylinder as the horn sounded giving the hosts their second win on the young Eurocup season.

Tywain McKee led the way for Unics with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Nikos Zisis added 14 points, and the trio of Ian Vougioukas, Kostas Kaimakoglou, and Goudelock contributed 10.

Davis and Sammy Mejia shared game-high honors with 18 points, Ermal Kuqo scored 12, and Rowland dropped in 11.

Group B
Elan Chalon – EWE Baskets Oldenburg, 71:82
EWE Baskets used a 5:14 run to start the final frame against Elan Chalon to pick up their first win in Group B. The results give both teams equal 1-1 records. Rickey Paulding dropped a game-high 24 to lead the way for EWE.

EWE got out to the early lead and held it through most of frame until a Mareks Jurevicus triple gave the hosts their first advantage, 18:17. EWE’s Robin Smeudlers knocked down a three-ball in the final seconds of the first quarter to knot the score at 22. During the second quarter the clubs stayed close and took a 39-all tie into the intermission. Late in the third Oldenburg put together a 2:10 run that put them up for good, but Elan was able to cut the margin to three, 54:57, at the end of the third 10. The guests opened the fourth with a 0:7 run to put them up by 10, 54:64, on their way to the win.

Paulding’s 24 was game-high for EWE, going 6 of 8 from behind the arc. Chris Kramer added 15, and both Konrad Wysocki and Andrea Crosariol contributed 10.

Jon Brockman scored a 20P/11R double-double to pace Elan, Jordan Aboudou scored 11, and A.J. Slaughter dropped 10.

Group D
Belfius Mons Hainaut – Virtus Rome, 76:88
Virtus Rome improved their record to 1-1 with a 12-point road victory over winless Belfius Mons Hainaut, 76:88. Jordan Taylor scored 22 to pace the Virtus win.

Belfius took the lead early and built a five-point advantage, 13:8, mid-way through the first 10. Virtus pulled even at 15 and went ahead 17:18, until a late triple from Talor Battle gave the hosts back the lead at 20:18 to close the first quarter. A 10:2 run to open the second frame gave Belfius a 10-point lead, 30:20. Rome found their range from deep and cut the gap to a point, but Belfius opened the lead to four to head into the break up 44:40. Virtus blew the game open with a 2:16 run to start the second half, but Belfius shot their way back to pull within six, 60:66, to head into the final 10. The hosts kept the game close early, but Virtus hit multiple long-balls to extend their lead to 14 and finish with a 12-point advantage, 76:88.

Taylor was game-high with 22 for Virtus. Phillip Goss added 15, Jimmy Baron dropped in 14, and Quinton Hosley added 13.

Demontez Stitt scored 16 for Belfius, Battle scored 15, Maarten Rademakers and Justin Cage scored 12 each, and Jason Love added 10.

Group F
Buducnost Voli Podgorica – Aykon TED Ankara Kolejliler, 80:73
Buducnost Voli Podgorica earned their first win of the 2013-14 Eurocup season with an 80:73 victory over Aykon TED Ankara Kolejliler. Suad Sehovic scored 21 for Voli, while Vladimir Golubovic was game-high with 26 for Aykon.

The hosts grabbed the early lead, getting up 18:12, with the tally sitting at 25:20 at the end of the first 10. Ankara countered in the second to take a 38:39 advantage at the half. Buducnost took over in the third quarter, outscoring their guests 22:13, to head into the final quarter up 60:52. Early in the fourth Ankara went on a 2:8 run to cut the gap to two, 62:60. Buducnost countered quickly to get back up eight, 74:66, then maintain through the end for the win.

Sehovic paced Buducnost with 21, Cedomir Vitkovac and Jeleel Akindele added 17 each.

Golubovic’s 25 was game-high for Ankara, Clay Tucker added 19, Ali Berent Kavaklioglu scored 10.
