California ends Ariznona’s perfect run

California

NCAA – The California Golden Bears have ended number-one ranked Arizona’s winning streak via a last-second jumper to come away with the win at home 58-60. Justin Cobbs knocked down the fade away shot from 16 feet at the buzzer. Adding injury to insult, Arizona had to play most of the game without their sophomore forward, Brandon Ashley, who is feared to be lost for the season to a possibly broken foot. Ashley is Arizona’s second-best scorer and rebounder and his loss will force them to make some adjustments.

In Ashley’s absence, Arizona got a lift from starting center Kaleb Tarczewski who finished the game 18 points and six rebounds. Most of his points came from the free-throw line, where he was a perfect 12-12.

California was coming off a three-game skid, before stunning Arizona with this surprising upset. Arizona, now can focus on winning and not be burdened by having to protect their undefeated status.

Arizona shot poorly, making on 32.3% of their shots from the field. Their best player, Nick Johnson, could not buy a bucket as he went 1-14 to finish with just four points and five turnovers. T.J. McConnell was the only starter to help out Tarczewski on offense as he finished with 13 points for the night.

For California it was all about the game’s hero, Justin Cobbs who scored the team’s final dozen points and the epic game-winning shot. He ended the game with 19 points and seven assists to his name. David Kravish and Richard Solomon chipped in 14 and 12 points respectively.

At the end of the day, Arizona showed that it isn’t perfect and that they are beatable. California gets a much needed boost and hopefully sparks the momentum that it needs.
