For very cheap airline tickets to Frankfurt, we recommend that you check out the websites of www.air-berlin.de and www.ryanair.com . The international airport of Frankfurt has a subway station in the terminal itself, that will take you directly to the city centre and to the Nordwest Zentrum (with a connection). Keep in mind that low coast aircompanies do not fly to the international airport of Frankfurt but to Frankfurt-Hahn (45 minutes away) or Dusseldorf 90 minutes away).
In contrast to cities such as Munich that reclaimed the physical character of their past after World War II, Frankfurt, erected skyscrapers -- hence the nickname Mainhattan, a reference to the River Main, by which it stands. Despite its modest size (fifth among German cities, with a population of 650,000), Frankfurt is the country's financial capital, and has become the headquarters of the new European Central Bank after the launch of the Euro -- the European Union's new unified currency -- on January 1, 1999. The city's commercial clout has deep historic roots dating from its emergence as a major trading center in the early 13th century. Its first international Autumn Fair was held in 1240; in 1330 its Spring Fair was inaugurated.Today, these and other fairs showcase the latest in books, cars, consumer goods and technology. Both are still going strong today. The city's stock exchange, one of the half dozen most important in the world, was established in 1595. The Rothschilds opened their first bank here in 1798. The long history of trade might help explain the temperament of Frankfurters -- competitive but open-minded -- who are sometimes compared to Americans. Frankfurt's history spans more than 1,200 years. It was one of the joint capitals of Charlemagne's empire; the city where emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were elected and crowned; the site of Gutenberg's print shop; the birthplace of Goethe, for many Germany's greatest poet; and the city where the first German parliament met. And though Frankfurt may be a city of balance sheets and share prices, it adds up to more than just expense-account restaurants and sleek cars. Frankfurt has world-class ballet, opera, theater, casino, and art exhibitions; an important piece of Germany's publishing industry; a large university (45,000 students), famous for a school of such modern thinkers as Adorno and Habermas; and two of the three most important daily newspapers in Germany, the Frankfurter Allgemeine and the Frankfurter Rundschau. In Frankfurt, you find yourself in the heart of a powerful, sophisticated, and cosmopolitan nation. There may not be that much here to remind you of the Old World, but there's a great deal that explains the success story of post-war Germany. | |
